Cheapoair Cancelation Fee

Cheapoair Cancelation Fee of $50/$75

I just had a costly mistake that I want to warn you all about.  All airlines operating to/from the USA have a grace period that allows you to cancel your flight within 24 hours of booking for no charge.  The rules do not apply to travel agents (such as Expedia or Orbitz), they can charge any amount of cancelation fee.  However, most choose not to in order to maintain good customer relations.  It costs these travel agencies nothing to allow the cancelation within 24 hours.  This leads me to the Cheapoair cancelation fee that seems excessive.

Cheapoair was one of the few mainstream online travel agents that deviated from this model.  They allowed cancelation for only 4 hours with no charge.  And you had to call in to make the cancelation within that 4 hours.  It was a pain, but in the world of wacky airfare booking, sometimes Cheapoair is the only option for booking a unique fare.

I ran into that this evening.  I booked one of the amazing $323 RT US-Singapore flights on JAL.  The fares were disappearing and the flight wouldn’t book through on Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline or directly through JAL.  Finally I tried Cheapoair and it worked!  In the past I have often done this; book now and figure out if the plans will work later.  Well, this time the plans didn’t work.

Resolution

I called Cheapoair to cancel the ticket, well within the 4 hour window (I thought) Cheapoair offered.  The very nice customer service rep advised me that there would be a $75 charge to cancel.  I was able to talk to her supervisor and he informed me that the new policy went into effect on February 20, 2017.  Now, even if you cancel within 30 seconds of making the reservation, you will accrue a $75 charge for international flight and/or Biz/First Class cancelations ($50 for domestic Economy).

Cheapoair Cancelation Fee

Not only that, but you have to PAY the cancelation fee (charged immediately) and then wait for the funds from the original ticket purchase price to be refunded to your card (can take 10 days or so).

This is a poor policy by Cheapoair.  It does not cost them anything to cancel a flight within 24 hours.  That is the rules by the Department of Transportation in the US.  So Cheapoair is pocketing that $75 fee.

After speaking at length with the customer service rep, he agreed to waive the fee this one time.  But it was a long conversation.  I would not count on ever having the fee waived.

Conclusion

I will never book with Cheapoair again and would encourage you to never book with them either.  This is a poor policy that is not well advertised.  The only place I found it when doing a dummy booking was right before hitting “Book” after entering your credit card info.  Please spread the word.  Don’t fall victim to the Cheapoair cancelation fee.

      • I just booked with them and their website changed my date without me knowing so I ended up booking the wrong tickets, so I had to change the date and the tickets i ended up finding on the airline site for $500 cheaper. I called and they charged me 50 X6tickets $300 to cancel all within 15 minutes. I chatted with them on line and sent the link i’ll post below and she made a one time exception for $10 per ticket I dint want to complain so I felt 60 was ok. Please don’t use them!

          • Same here. My reservation needed change within an hour but each person was charged $75. So, we end up canceled the whole booking because we don’t like how they treat their customers. Be aware of this ripped-off fee, a 24 hours policy is a lie. This big corporation need to stop stealing their customers money & said it is their policy. There is no way this can be legal. We all should sue them for a refund.

          • They charge me $100 for cancellation fee less than 10 hours after booking! At first they want to charge me $75/ticket (*6 tickets). Do not try booking with them anymore. Sucks…

        • This happened to me too. I booked a ticket for my daughter and I. As soon as I hit the pay bottom, I was given another day to travel and since I was busy at work, I decided to change my ticket the following day only to be told that I had to pay a 500 dollar penalty fee which I paid. Now I missed my flight and tried to rebook at the airport and was told by American Airlines to pay 3,900 dollars per person . When I bought my ticket, it said American Airlines until the last minute when I found out that I was booked with British Airways. I have been calling cheapoair to see if I can fly another day but they keep telling me that their system is down and if no one answers me by 12 midnight, I will lose the whole ticket altogether. I am a single hard working mom and do not have money to throw away. Someone needs to be held responsible for these unscrupulous acts from cheapoair. Does anyone know who can help me with this giant?

          • Beware CheapOAir policies

Mistake in online booking, so immediate call to cancel, since 4 of us needed to arrive around noon (not midnight). I was told difference in fare, but charged an extra $252 when COA by law is able to cancel a booking with an airline for no charge within the first 24 hours.

Very poor follow-up, customer service shirked their responsibility. Pointed me to airline who was at fault. Airline said COA has a reputation of tacking on extra fees when not required! $20 assistance fee reversed, but spent $232 more than it should have cost.

If you are booking a ticket for travel within, from, or to the United States, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations state that you are entitled to a full refund on non-refundable tickets within 24 hours of booking as long as your flight is at least 7 days away—with no cancellation fee

A very frustrating and expensive experience.

      • Omg they want to charge me 600 to 800 dallors to move my connecting flight 3 hours, no way is 51 minutes enough time. My flight is still 7 weeks away. I don’t know what to do. I all i do know is im never using them again if this doesn’t get fixed. Can the airlines override oair? I need something Anything to make this better. Going to visit my wife and first time to be with my little 1 1/2 year old girl and i can’t afford to spend more money like that. Already busting my butt trying to bring them to america while supporting them. I mean come on this isnt going to be a fun trip for me anyway. Cry my butt off meeting her and then keeping a little one out of trouble and hearing nothing but screaming all the time, maybe? Sigh

So where did that 349.00 go …..? I WILL NEVER use Chespoair ever again!!!! They rip people off!!! The airlines would have never done that.. so my son is out $349 and no ticket

    • I recently booked a flight from Los Angeles to Taipei for $511.00. Thought was good price, but found out it was one way price when I tried to print the itinerary. I immediately cancelled it. You have to cancel it through a real person. That is 10 minutes between booking confirmation and cancellation. Cheapoair charged me 75 Dollars for the cancellation. I will not deal with this company at all.

    • How do we complain officially? We also have the worst experience in booking our flights to cheapoair believing we save a lot but it went the otherway around. We had to book with another airline so we can go to our destination on the same day since the ticket purchased with cheapoair had issues. We had additional cost in buying a new ticket. We are not able to use the ticket, we can’t cancel or refund them anymore so it is a total lost and we incurred additional cost. We hope airline companies do not allow them to purchase and sell their tickets since they mess up the routes , transits (some require visa) and destination in combining tickets without transparency with their passengers.

  5. Wish I had read this before I booked my flight! Called within 10 minutes of booking the flight to cancel. They tried to charge me $50, but I don’t have a credit or debit card, and they insisted on having that fee charged before they cancelled the flight. Rep asked if I had someone else’s card I could use – and is GOING TO CALL ME BACK for it. They INSISTED it be paid before they would cancel. So, I will be on the phone with a supervisor today. Thanks for letting me know about that the fee is strictly for their pockets – it will give me some ammunition.

  6. Shame on me for not reading the “real FINE print”……but really, shame on Cheapo-air. What a scam. I have never heard of such a thing. I wonder if the Better Business Bureau are familiar with such practices. Buyer beware. It is almost worth the loss to not have to deal with their ever so helpful customer service. When I received my bill I noticed they did credit the $19.95 that I paid for the insurance just in case we did have to cancel. Nice touch Cheapo-Air. Your name says it all.

  7. I booked to 2 round trip tickets on their website and also like another author noticed that they change my return date without my permission. I immediately called customer service (within 3 min. after booking), but a rep told me I have to pay cancellation fee $100 or $150 to change the date. I canceled and in the next 5 min bought tickets on Hipmunk website for 24 dollars cheaper and with the better flight hours. Hipmunk also has 24 hours cancellation period. Never again will do business with CheapOair and agree with those who think that BBB should know about their business practice.

    Unbelievable.

Even though they waived the cancellation fee for my canceling within three hours of making my reservation– because I said I was afraid of getting the Zika virus and am legitimately pregnant. However, this is not acceptable company policy. Mark my words— somebody will sue for misrepresention at some point.

  17. Booked two tickets same to the airport for both departure and arrival. But after I finish credit card payment I realized that departure and arrival airports are different. I was changed automatically by their poor system. I chatted with help desk soon and she said cancellation fee will be 10$ per person. Then I asked this cost will be valid for all time. She said yes. So didn’t bother about cancellation on that moment. But today after 2 weeks (trip is another 3 months ahead) I start to chat with help desk to cancel my booking. Then he said cancellation fee will be USD250 per ticket. After arguing with them they gave me 25USD discount per ticket. So I had to pay 500USD to cancel two tickets. (booking date is 3 months ahead). This is my first time I used Cheapoair and will never use or recommend this scammers.

  18. I cancelled with CheapOair within an hour of booking with them and was charged 150$!!! Needless to say even with that 150$ charge, booking through frontier airlines directly was cheaper. I paid 692$ for 3 people through frontier direct site. CheapOair APPEARED the cheapest through all my research but was 980$. I took the 150$ cancellation fee because that 150 fee plus my new 692 flight still adds up cheaper than what i paid them. Also everyone is right. They take forever to refund your money but have no problem taking that fee immediately instead of deducting it through your refund which i THOUGHT would be the case. Never again!

When you see 24 hours cancellation without any fees mentioned, you almost take it for granted it is free cancellation as it is offered by all other players in the market. That’s how they got you.

Non-refundable airfares are much cheaper than refundable ones, but if you cancel or change your flight, you’ll pay a hefty fee. But there are some loopholes and workarounds.

If you are booking an airfare in the United States, U.S. Department of Transportation regulations require that, as long as you’ve booked a non-refundable ticket 7 days ahead of your flight, you’re entitled to hold your reservation and the fare and change or cancel your reservation within 24 hours of booking, without paying a cancellation fee

  37. And yet another victim, and the crazy thing is that I cancelled with them just last year and had completely forgotten about their cancellation fees (shame on me). My recommendation is to haggle with them to reduce the fees. Tell them you want to book another flight thru Cheapoair but will not do so if they don’t waive the fees, and if they don’t do that, see how far you can go with reducing the fees. At first they offered $50 per ticket (from $75), then after more complaining, they offered $35. Now, if only I can make a mental note to myself: never ever book with Cheapoair again.

  38. As Nicola mentioned, just inform them that DOT regulations PROHIBIT airlines from charging cancelation fees within 24 hours of booking, provided that the booking is at least 7 days in advance of the scheduled departure. 14 CFR 259.5(b)(4).

They tried to get me to pay $100.00 in cancelation fees within 2 hours of booking, for a trip 2 months away. When I offered to read the regulations to the rep., she waived the fee without any further argument. In all, it was less than 15 minutes to cancel my itinerary with no fees.

It was surprising that I couldn’t even cancel it immediately and only by phone.
Although not even half an hour passed, they charged me $25 for cancellation fee.

  46. Beware of an important as aspect of their booking flow. When I initially searched for the flight options, I selected the time of the flight that I wanted to take. After entering all the details including credit card information, it told me that that price is no longer available and showed me a different higher price. However, they also changed the flight times to some random time. So, please make sure that if you are continuing the flow that you check again if you are not only checking for the price but also the whole itinerary of the flight.

Because, once you book it, you will have to deal with $75 cancellation fees. In my case, the first-line agent transferred me to another cancellation specialist. That specialist put me on a hold for 10 mins (with the music on) and then all of a sudden the music stopped and you were left with a deadline.

Don’t recommend cheapoair and won’t be coming back.

He did not speak English and when I asked to talk to someone who spoke English he stated there was no one here … Go figure !!!! So I’m out $349 and I need to go to the bank to see if they charged me for anything else!!! They are nothing but a scam !!! I will never use them again !!!

  48. Unfortunately, I fell into the cheapoair trap. I booked a flight at one price when i completed my information, the price jump to $120 more. I called with in 5 minutes to cancel flight. I was told I would be charged. $50 to cancel. After talking to a number of customer service reps, finally a supervisor agreed to cancel flight for $10. I will never book with cheapair again. Do they need my $10 that badly??? Bad business policy!

    • I just have a same situation with CHEAPHUB. The price jump to $250. Calling for cancellation immediately, they said my ticket is NON REFUNDABLE, and dont allow me to cancel. After stressful conversation with manager, they probably charge me $200 or more. Terrible experience I ever have in my life for booking online, felling like they treat on their customer.

  49. Booking 4 tickets to go to Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City for next 3 months at more than 5k. Great price at first look but not good deal for refund, exchange or cancellation. Take hours of phone calls, chat and emails to customer services, but go no where.

Good price, good response for customer services but absolutely don’t trust the 24 hrs cancellation as advertise.

Beware of adding Trip Protection, Premium Support Package, Price Drop Assurance, Baggage Protection, and especially Travel Protection Plan Cost. Might be very costly !!!

    Have a good flight!!!

  50. It just happened to me too. I booked a ticket to Europe and after I hit a booking button and got confirmation I found a note “no baggage”. I mean who flies overseas only with a purse or carry on? I called Cheapoair and lady said there was no baggage allowed on the plane!!! I was willing to pay extra but she didn’t even offer any other option. I canceled 20 minutes after booking and was charged 75$. I will never use them anymore. So disappointing!!!

  51. Same here! Unfortunately I didn’t read anything on their cancellation policy before I booked. What a mistake! After two hours, I called their customer services to cancel the ticket and I was sure there will be no fees or any charges. I was shocked to hear about that 75$/ person and worst off the agent kept on arguing that Cheapoair has no choice because of the airline company. It doesn’t make sense!! They have no respect for their customers!

I have exactly the same issue with them my flight is for next month and they wants to charge me $400 to cancel. After talking to them this last time i am going to compose a letter of complaint against them and send to all the agencies that is connected to transportation licensing, they have to explain to me how it is legal.

  53. Happened to me. First time to use Cheap O Air. I also normally dont take Frontier. I know that they have a lot of restrictions. In my unique situation. Same switch scheme happened to me. I selected a specific date. After booking they say I confirmed for another date two days later. I was going about my day, I did see a text message that said I picked an alternate date. I found that strange. I was super busy so decided to check when I got home that evening and saw my email had me confirmed for two days later. Of which I did not agree to. Or so I felt. There definitely is a misleading part in the order process. Needless to say I tried to reach them on CHAT and they need all kinds of details including booking confirmation number personal contact info and I kept having to get the info from my email and then I would get kicked out of chat only to wait for awhile because the queue would revert back and there would be 10 or more customers waiting to get connected. At the same time I called and it took me a long time to connect to an agent. The agent was pleasant patient. Like customers in this thread, patient and pleasant at the cost of charging me $25 to cancel. My ticket under $90, they only credited me for $78. Then told me when I rebook online and use the credit with Frontier I have to pay $10 for booking. I will not use Cheap O Air ever again. Its too misleading. Even my statement had three different charges. I understand that this could be how they operate in order to be able to charge less. Not sure how long before this company can stay in business with so many disgruntled customers. Unless they expect it and then only to close and open under another brand.

  54. So I just had a ridiculous experience with Cheapoair.
I booked a ticket with a wrong middle name. I don’t even have a middle name. I have no idea where that middle name came from. (My bad didn’t check again after putting my name in there)
Realized the middle name within 10 seconds after the order went through, I called Cheapoair. Rep said he will have to cancel and rebook, but with a different time that won’t work for me. Blah blah, then he said he’ll charge me $75 for taking out the middle name and book the same flight for me, or help me cancel all the tickets for $150.
I hang up and called my departure flight airline(Sun Country), got told that I can actually call them directly within 24h before the flight departure to change the name for $15.
    Ha!
Then I went to the returning flight airline(UA) trying to see if they could do a similar thing. Wasn’t able to find much info other than saying changing the flight is $250.
Well I didn’t want to change the flight…
Is correcting my name the same with changing my flight? Wasn’t entirely sure, since there are also other people online saying UA actually helps people correct their name pretty easily without a fee.
Went back to Cheapoair, called the customer service again, simply said I needed to correct my name. The rep said, “ok, but we’ll charge you $25 for it.” I said ok, phone went through to the post-ticketing dep.
Post-ticketing rep put me on hold for a minute or two, came back and told me since it’s a domestic flight, middle name wouldn’t even matter and I can get on board with the wrong middle name no problem!
    ?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!
And then he said, “but it you do want to change the name, there’s a $44.5 fee.”

    OMG WTF?
From $75, to $25, to $44.5, all randomly! And I still am not sure with the middle name mistakenly added to my name am I able to board. LOL!!!
Holy shit do I feel grateful to have this ridiculous experience with Cheapoair. I for sure will not book through them EVER again.

    • I was highly dissatisfied and stressed with my recent booking experience with Cheapoair. I received erroneous information from the first agent when booking a return flight as well as additional costs for a blue ribbon service which he stated was at no additional cost. I detected the latter charge when I checked my credit card.

My efforts to resolve the booking error within eight hours of the booking met with various negative responses. One agent said it was against company policy to cancel, another said that a cancelation fee would be charged and another said the cancelation and rebooking could be done within 24 hours with no penalty.

After over three hours another agent was able to cancel and rebook my flight but this process also incurred additional cost as the agent seemed to be manipulating the cost to insure a higher ticket.

Cheapoair must operate transparency and integrity. It has lost a valuable customer and I cannot recommend the service.

  55. I canceled my ticket with Cheapoair, and they charged me $500!! just for the cancelation fee! oh my god. The calling representative urge you to cancel or do any charge of your tickets. They speaked with unclear statement,, and after you give them you bank card information. They charged your money first! Then, I received the email. oH MY GOD. $500 for cancelation. I was not agree with the deal and immediately calling back, I talked to several persons on the phone, until now haven’t get my money back. Is there anyone can give me some advises how can I get my money back?

  56. I would like to share my bad experience when booking tickets on Cheaphub. When i booked, the ticket price on the website is around $1117. However, when they send a confirmation message, they charge me $1375. Immediately, I call the assistant to ask maybe something was wrong with the payment. After checking, she said the price is $1375 and not $1117. So I would like to cancel my ticket, she immediately charged me $75. I disagree because the system was sent a wrong price and also I just booked the ticket 10-15 minutes ago. Then she gave me a deal that I only paid $37 for cancellation fee and told me wait for her 5 minute to cancel my booking. Everything changed after 5 minutes she told me that I had to lose $200 if i wanted to cancel. I feel like she treat on me but I still decided to cancel. So hanging up my phone and went to Cheaphub to cancel my booking. however, the system did not allow me to cancel . I had to call them back again. Just 30 minutes later from a first call, other lady told me that my ticket is NON-REFUNDABLE. At this time, they gave me completely different information from first assistant and did not give me any solution for my situation since it was not my fault. So I asked to talk to the manager. After more then 1 hour of stressful and tired conversation, finally, the manager help me to cancel but I didn’t know how much they would charge me for cancellation. It would be $200 or more than. Also I have no idea when they would refund my money.
Hope everyone should BE REALY CAREFULLY when booking on the online. Sometime you could lose your money because of someone’s fault.

  57. Same experience as all of these folks. Cancelled tickets within hours and charged a processing fee. I disputed the charge through my credit card company. But after two months I was charged a $77.90 fee for cancellation. THIS IS A SCAM! Why is this company being allowed to operate and rip off all of these people.

  60. Omg! I’m going through the same thing with this company. They have no compassion for their customers who need to be somewhere on a certain day. We booked a flight to NZ after realising we were on the wrong site after checking my account US not AU, I quickly rang the company back after 5mins and yes after getting the run around but had my flight cancelled. After speaking with the lady I thought it was sorted, she sent me the email saying that my refund was successful hmmm! Informed me to go to the bank, so the next day I went to the bank to give them the approval code to ensure I get my refund, both bank and credit card company had no idea about this process. No one from the company will contact us and at this stage still waiting. We are so furious with their conduct as we explained to them that we needed to urgently be in NZ by Thursday but guess what we still waiting. Will never ever deal this company ever again

Customer service made me jump through hoops including sending them the pin code from my email, then confirming other numbers. They said I would receive a refund 7-14 days yet my flight is still shown on their website as active. If they were to cancel the flight, it should be immediate. 66. I will NEVER use Cheapair again. Not nice to take advantage of stuck and frustrated passengers during the Coronavirus crisis. They don’t answer phone calls and their website doesn’t allow you to cancel an existing flight. Terrible experience. I hope this company puts themselves on our shoes. We didn’t cancel flights or trips because we wanted, but because of this situation. So never again Cheapair.

  67. I have also learned my lesson. I am a 78 year old female who has been told I should not fly at this time. Booked my flight to new Hampshire on February first for a big birthday bash for grandson. Flight is for March 1. I have been trying for one week to get a credit and reschedule for a later date when this crisis is over. I am not asking for a refund! All there 800 numbers shut off after you sit there for 1 hour. I have sent numerous emails, chat requests and call back requests to no response. So I can assume I have just donated my air fare of 424.00 to them as I will not be on that flight tomorrow. Hopefully this poorly run company has someone in charge that reads customer complaints and takes it a little seriously. I realize this is a troubling time for the airlines and a lot of cancellations but they need better customer relations. I will certainly ly go directly to the airline to book my next flght.

    • Hi Freddie,

I had the same trouble! I tried for days without avail and finally messaged all of their employees online I could find. I finally got a response – someone reached out to be from their supervisor’s team and is trying to get me the refund. I don’t think you should just write this off as a “donation”. It’s not right that you pay hundreds of dollars and just forfeit all of it.
Here’s the number for the CheapoAir supervisor line – 855-292-7496. Supposedly less busy. You can try reaching them. If that doesn’t help, I’d try to reach their staff other ways.

      Hope that helps!

    • Hi Donna and Joseph. I hope you are able to get your refund. A reminder that this is not Cheapoair, but a blog that includes a post about the company.

As a side note, I would encourage you to reach out directly to the airline that your travel is on. They may be more likely to help than Cheapoair.

  69. Yes.. extremely bad customer service!! I’ve been trying for days to get in touch with them to cancel my tickets – due to coronavirus. Chat lines have hundreds of people in queue and it just disconnects after waiting for hours and hours. None of the phone numbers work! Never use CheapoAir. I’ve been messaging about this to all the company people on social media – I intend to post about it as much as I can.

  70. Hey everyone,

I had the same trouble! I tried to reach them via chat and/or phone for days without any use! I finally messaged all of their employees online I could find. I finally got a response – someone reached out to be from their supervisor’s team and is trying to get me the refund. It’s not right that you pay hundreds of dollars and just forfeit all of it.

Here’s the number for the CheapoAir supervisor line – 855-292-7496. Supposedly less busy. You can try reaching them. If that doesn’t help, I’d try to reach their staff other ways.

I spent dozens of frustrated hours on this that I am not going to get back..but hopefully it’ll help some others of you!

  71. I booked a flight to Ft Myers Florida back on February 11, Yes just before the coronavirus mess. Our family had leased a home on Sanibel Island for a week. When I scheduled my flight, I scheduled it for Saturday, April 18, rather than Sunday, April 19. It cost an additional $300 to change the flight by one day!! Now, due to the coronavirus, our lease on the home has been canceled and yes, each of us has received a FULL refund as of this past week. I originally called CheapoAir on March 11 to cancel and due to the large number of customer calls back then, I could not reach them by phone. I set up the cancel request online and HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE!! I just tried calling AGAIN and the message “due to multiple factors, our contact center has limited service…please use our online forms”. That’s the reason I requested a REFUND online in the first place! I will NEVER use CheapoAir AGAIN!!! Huge mistake!

  72. Don’t use cheapoair. They are charging me ~10% as travel agent fees when I asked for a refund where the airline itself has cancelled the flights due to COVID19. I will never use cheapoair in future!

  73. This airline is a scam. I had called multiple time for the past 2 months to find options for my tickets I purchased for Maui. Due to unforeseen health issues and a surgery that prohibits my family and I to travel. I had to pay $245 for cancelling 7 of my tickets in order to keep the credit I paid for the total airfare. When I asked them what the purpose of their protection plan due to issues that is occurring now, I was told it was through a 3rd party vendor. When I asked them for the authorization code for charging my card, the representative kept telling me it would be sent to my email when I asked for him to provide me with a number over the phone. When I asked for a confirmation of the cancellation of my tickets and verification of my ticket credits I had to press the agent to get a reference number over the phone instead of being told multiple times that it will be sent to my email. I am highly unsatisfied with the lack of regard of reason my trip had to be postpone.
