SingleRoadTrip: Leg 1 – Seattle to Sacramento

SingleRoadTrip: Leg 1 – Seattle to Sacramento

Day 1 – Seattle to Portland – 173 Miles

The first day of my trip was a quick Seattle to Portland down I-5.  I stayed the night at the new Hyatt Centric Downtown Portland and had dinner with a friend in the area.

Day 2 – Portland to the Oregon Coast to Eugene – 209 miles

The second day I decided to detour out to the coast of Oregon on my way to Eugene.  Along the way I stopped at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville to check out the Spruce Goose.

I then hit the coast at Lincoln City and followed it down to Newport before heading inland to Eugene.

I spent the night at the Hyatt Place in Eugene.

Day 3 – Eugene to Crater Lake – 148 miles

For day three I headed east to Crater Lake National Park.  The rim road was closed for a portion, but I was able to get some great views and take a short hike.  Crater Lake is a former volcano that collapsed on itself creating an extremely deep and pure lake fed by snow.

That evening I spent the night camping at the Mazama Campground, the only campground at Crater Lake that takes reservations.

Day 4 – Crater Lake to Lassen Volcanic National Park to Sacramento – 416 miles

I woke up early, packed up my camp and drove south to Lassen Volcanic National Park.  I entered at the north side of the park and drove the 30 mile highway through the park.

Lassen Peak is a volcano that erupted in 1914.  There are still active sulfur springs, including Bumpass’s Hell that you can hike in to (about 3 miles round trip).

I continued the drive down to Sacramento, CA where I spent the night in a suite at the Hyatt Regency.

Total Miles: 946
