Hyatt Centric Downtown Denver Review

Hyatt has a large footprint in Denver. Previously I had stayed at the Thompson which is just a few blocks from the Centric. I had completed a weekend at The Art Hotel and needed a hotel for one night before flying out.

The Hyatt Centric Downtown Denver, which opened in 2021, is a Category 4 property which means you can use either a free night certificate or spend between 12,000 and 18,000 World of Hyatt points per night. It seems that cash stays are a bargain at the Centric. I was able to find a rate of $125 (plus tax for a total of $145) on Expedia which beat the rate offered directly from Hyatt. So I made a Best Rate Guarantee claim to match the $125 rate plus get 5,000 World of Hyatt points (which I value at $75).

Location

The Hyatt Centric Denver is located at the corner of 18th and Champa. It is a central location, about 8 blocks from Union Station and two blocks over from the 16th Street pedestrian mall.

Like in many urban areas, you will see people sleeping on the streets. When I checked in, a man with either mental health problems or on drugs (or both) refused to leave the lobby and police ended up arriving and arresting him. I never felt unsafe, but some guests would probably be concerned. The guest floors do require a room key for access in the elevator.

Check In

I arrived around noon and was able to immediately check in. I do not think the hotel had a high occupancy rate during my visit. Despite the staff dealing with the unwanted visitor, they were professional and got me quickly checked in.

The lobby is bright and modern, though relatively small for a hotel with 200+ rooms.

There is a cafe and bar in the lobby as well as the hotel’s restaurant.

I was assigned room 911 on the 9th floor (out of a total of 15 floors). There are a total of 264 rooms in the hotel, and I believe only a few of them are suites. I booked a standard 1 King Bed, and I suppose I was upgraded to a 1 King Bed High Floor as an Explorist.

Room

The room is small. As you enter, the bathroom is immediately on your left and a mirror is on your right.

When the bathroom sliding door is shut, you have access to the open closet space, including coffee maker, safe, and mini fridge. Robes are provided.

The bed is centered on an area rug.

A headboard feature adds some character. Wall lights and outlets are on either side of the bed. Below the bed are motion activated lights to help you find the bathroom during the night.

The bed faces a wall mounted TV and desk. There is also a built in shelf for your luggage.

A chaise lounge chair sits in front of the floor to ceiling windows.

While the room is small, it feels modern and has some unique touches (like the wire deer head on the wall) that make it feel more boutique than a Hyatt Regency.

The view from my room was of the Residence Inn across the street.

Bathroom

The bathroom is basic with a single sink, a good amount of counter space, and a large shower.

The large shower has a single wall mounted shower head. The bath products are the Centric standard wall mounted Bee Kind brand.

Gym and Roof Top Patio

The gym is located on the top floor.

Also on the top floor is a roof top patio with both indoor and outdoor space to relax. I believe that sometimes they have weekend events open to the public with a pop up bar on the roof.

There is one restaurant onsite on the ground floor, though I didn’t get a chance to try it out during my visit.

The Hyatt Centric Downtown Denver offers some affordable rates for small but modern rooms. The Thompson is in a slightly more central location and a nicer property, but likely twice the cost. While I haven’t stayed at the Hyatt Grand or Regency in Denver, I would think that the Centric offers more character.
