Imperial Hotel Tallinn Review

Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia located on the Baltic, has a rich history.  Throughout the years it has been ruled (or occupied) by Denmark, Sweden, Germany and most recently Russia before regaining independence in 1991.  The old town is the charming area that most tourists will want to explore.  My guess is that the majority of visitors to the city don’t spend the night — they arrive and depart the same day by ferry or cruise ship.  I decided to stay for a night and am glad that I did.  I picked, based on Rick Steves, the Imperial Hotel located in Old Town.

Location

There are two sections of Old Town — upper and lower.  The Imperial Hotel is located in the lower portion against the wall.  It is a five minute walk to the Town Square and a 5 minute walk to the train station.  Old Town is very walkable and you won’t need to worry about transportation except to/from the airport or ferry terminal.

Check In

I arrived early after an overnight on the Silja Europa.  Even though it was only 9:30am, the staff was able to get me in a room that was available.

I wouldn’t say that the staff I encountered were friendly, but they were helpful when asked.  Just not the warm and fuzzy type.

Room

I was assigned room 303.  There are only two floors of guest rooms (2xx and 3xx).  The room is small but functional.  The decor is quite a mix and not very matched.  There is a TV, desk, and small area to store your clothes and luggage.  There is no safe.

The window opens and looks out to a courtyard with a view of one of the town towers.

Bathroom

The bathroom has been updated and while quite small, has everything you need.  The only bath product is the wall mounted soap both at the sink and in the shower.

I paid just over $100 for one night in July which is high season.  The location makes the hotel for sure.  The breakfast is basic but included.  The room is clean and functional.  It is a fine spot to stay for a night to explore historic Tallinn.
