Caption by Hyatt Nashville The Gulch Review

Hyatt continues the annoying hotel trend of adding brands that don’t make any sense. Enter Caption by Hyatt, part of their Essentials collection of brands; that also includes the limited service Hyatt Place and Hyatt House properties. I couldn’t tell you the difference between Caption and Centric, and I seriously doubt anyone at Hyatt could tell you the difference either. But I get that hotel guests aren’t the customer of these brands — property developers are the customers. Though I shouldn’t complain; my stay at the Caption in Nashville is my 15th Hyatt brand which means I get a Category 1-4 Free Night Certificate.

Caption by Hyatt Nashville is a Category 5 property, meaning it will cost between 17,000-23,000 World of Hyatt points per night. The 210 room property opened in late 2024.

I booked two nights at Caption by Hyatt Nashville last minute for a Thursday and Friday night in July. The rate for a King Bed High Floor room on Thursday night was $183 and Friday night was $210 before taxes. Total for two nights was $465. The day I booked they had a promotion of 3x points that was also the cheapest rate, so I received 15 World of Hyatt points per dollar instead of the usual 5. With how I value Hyatt points, that is equivalent to a bonus 15% off the price of the room.

I also used a Guest of Honor certificate. There is no resort fee at the hotel, but if you are driving, parking is $60 a night.

Location

Caption by Hyatt Nashville is located in The Gulch neighborhood, a hip area across the railroad tracks from Downtown and SoBro (South of Broadway). It is one block off Broadway on 12th. For comparison, the bars and clubs that tourists flock to are located on Broadway between 2nd and 6th.

I found Nashville to be very walkable (even in the hot summer). I liked staying outside the craziness of the nightlife zone but still close enough to walk. Nashville doesn’t have a light rail or subway; though there are buses available. I saw a ton of people riding electric scooters. An Uber from the airport cost me about $30.

Check In

I arrived around 6pm after making a reservation a few hours prior. I messaged the hotel prior to my arrival to ask about an upgraded as a Guest of Honor. I was upgraded to a King Bed Deluxe High Floor room. Note that there are no suites at the hotel and the best room category is King Bed Corner Deluxe.

I was quickly checked in by the friendly front desk staff and given my two bottles of water. It was explained that as a Guest of Honor breakfast would be in Cafe Between in the lobby and up to $35 would be covered.

The lobby is one big space that has seating, the bar, cafe and market as well as the check in desks. Apparently this common space is a signature of Caption properties.

There was live accoustic music each evening in this space. At the far back corner is a space with board games you can borrow.

Room

I was assigned to Room 1206 on the 12th (top) floor. There is an ice and filtered water machine on each floor.

As you enter, the bathroom is on the right and a lighted mirror is on the left. The bathroom is separated with a sliding frosted glass door which doesn’t offer complete privacy.

The Deluxe room is spacious. There is a seating area with arm chair, table, and leather-type couch.

The bed faces a wall mounted TV. While most of the floor is a wood plank design, the bed sits on an area rug made to look like cow skin.

The bed sits in front of a large mural as well as a tufted headboard with side tables and built in desk. There are plugs on each side of the bed and reading lights that illuminate both forward and backward. There is also a light that is supposed to illuminate the mural but it didn’t work in my room.

Next to the bed is an open wardrobe area. There are two drawers along with a safe. There is a space for a suitcase, hooks and an area to hang your clothing. At one side is the empty mini-fridge, coffee maker, and carafe that you can fill with water.

There are two sets of curtains; one sheer and one that mostly blocks out the light. There was some light bleed along the top. The view looks out over the rail yard and Gulch towards downtown.

Bathroom

The bathroom is bright with some fun wallpaper along the top half of the walls.

There is a single narrow sink with faucet at the side rather than the back. I found the water pressure in the sink to be weak. A lighted mirror has the phrase “Looking Pretty” in one corner.

The shower has a cool glass door that matches the sliding door to the bathroom.

The right side swings open and the shower is very roomy. There is a wall mounted shower head along with a wand. Unlike many hotels, you can have both shower heads on at the same time. There is no pressure control, but the shower heads do a good job of creating pressure.

The bath products are Apotheke.

Gym

There is a small gym on the second floor.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served at the Between Cafe in the lobby. For those with breakfast included, it covers $35 per person. The set up is a bit strange, you are encouraged to order at the counter and then take a seat, but you can also sit down and they’ll come to you to take your order. On a Saturday morning when I ordered there was only one staff person covering the counter, taking orders from tables, and running food and busing plates. Reinforcement came later, but it seemed like a lot for just one person.

The prices are very reasonable and I was able to get an entree, side of fruit, and glass of juice without going over $35.

In addition to the items on the paper menu, there are also more of takeaway type items including egg sandwiches and smaller bites.

I had the Churro Pancakes one morning and they were very tasty.

Overall

If you are thinking of booking Caption Nashville, just think of it as a Centric property. The area is nice and there are a lot of good restaurants to choose from within a 5 minute walk. I’d be curious to hear from others what they make of the Caption brand and if other properties are similar in nature to the Caption Nashville. In comparison with other Hyatts in Nashville, it seems that the cash rates are slightly lower at the Caption; and it is extremely close to both the Grand Hyatt and Thompson (both Category 6).

Have you stayed at the Caption Nashville? Or another Caption property? What was your impression?
