It isn’t always easy to cruise as a solo traveler. At times, it is actually more expensive for one person than for two people to sail. Cruise lines want to fit as many people on the ship as possible knowing that more passengers potentially means more revenue. So a solo cruiser taking up a stateroom that could fit two (or more) means potential loss on a sold out sailing.
Cruise lines are getting more creative for solo guests, and Norwegian Cruise Line seems to be leading the way. I’ve tried the solo stateroom on the Celebrity Edge Class ship and really liked it, but it just a slightly smaller Infinite Verandah cabin. NCL has a product called the Studio. On their newest Prima and Prima Plus class of ship, this is a series of 73 small interior solo rooms across two decks with a common Studio Lounge space.
I booked one of these Studio cabins on Luna’s inaugural seven night sailing out of Miami in April 2026.
Luna Studio Stateroom
I booked stateroom 12501. It is located on Deck 12 and is the closest room to the Studio Lounge on the port side. There are three halls of Studio rooms on both Deck 12 and Deck 13. The cabins on Deck 13 connect to the Studio Lounge through a private staircase. To access the hall (and the lounge), you have to scan your keycard. And then scan it again to enter your cabin.
The first thing to note is that the Studio cabins are small. 94 square feet small. Cruise staterooms are known for being small, but this takes it to the next level. Even if they allowed it, there is no way that two people could manage this space together. For comparison, a queen mattress is approximately 34 sq ft. So if you put three queen mattresses together, it would be larger than a Studio stateroom.
But for how small it is, the designers are downright geniuses.
As you enter, the door swings open against the foot of the bed. The bathroom is on the right and the storage is straight ahead and to the left.
The bed is probably roughly a double or full size mattress. It is bigger than a typical cruise bed when separated for two people.
Around the bed is a padded, velvet type material that softens the room. The TV is attached to the wall and can be swiveled out to be watched while laying in bed. There is a reading light at the head of the bed.
Additionally there is a cut out shelf that has a USB-A port for charging your phone (or plugging in a USB powered fan) and light switches to control the room.
The wall opposite the door is all about storage. Starting at the head of the bed is a full length mirror and closet. Next is a small desk area with a stool (the only seating in the cabin). Then you have four open shelves.
Under the four shelves is a small drawer (for paperwork or a laptop) and then the small safe.
The final space closest to the bathroom is an open wardrobe area with two pull out drawers. There are no hooks in the cabin except on the bathroom door. The hanger bar has a built in LED light strip.
The lighting in the room is great. There are two main sets of lights, one for more direct ceiling lighting and another set of backlighting. The desk also has two sets of lights: one for the mirror backlight and the other for two ceiling spot lights. It allows for a lot of options for how bright or dim you want the room. Of course since there are now windows, turning off all the lights make it pitch black.
Negatives
I did experience some negatives with the room. The first was the bedding. For some reason they don’t have either a mattress pad or fitted sheet on the bed. My guess is that those will be coming but haven’t been delivered yet since it is a brand new ship. Instead they use a flat sheet directly on the mattress. I move a lot in my sleep and every morning the sheet was untucked and parts of the mattress exposed. As it is essentially brand new, I wasn’t too concerned about accidental contact with the mattress. But in the long run if they don’t get this fixed… ew. With that said, they have a true duvet cover on the duvet which is great. The mattress was comfortable but overall the bedding didn’t feel luxurious and was already showing signs of wear.
The other big negative is the airflow. Most cruises I’ve been in can be freezer with AC blasting. In the Studio stateroom on Luna I always had my temperature set to the lowest setting and it still felt slightly warm for me. The air coming out of the AC unit on the ceiling was cold. My phone thermometer said around 60 degrees. However the rest of the room was always at around 72-74 degrees. I just don’t think there is enough movement of air. Fortunately I packed a USB powered fan that I set up next to the bed that helped a lot.
The room also doesn’t have a fridge in it. Pretty minor but I do like to keep some chilled water in my room. Fortunately the Studio Lounge has ice and water at all hours.
I would have liked to see some hooks added to the room (so bring your magnetic hooks). Maybe on the back of the door, next to the desk or in the open wardrobe.
One other very minor issue is the touchscreen panel that controls the temperature and also the Do Not Disturb light. When you turn on the Do Not Disturb setting, the touchscreen stays illuminated all night; which gives off a lot of light. I just learned to not turn on the Do Not Disturb when trying to sleep.
Bathroom
The bathroom is also really well laid out. It sits at the end of the bed and is separated by a partially solid, partially glass partition.
The glass shower door doubles as a door for the bathroom. If you want to close off the bathroom, you swing the door out and it effectively seals off the bathroom.
There is no option for privacy, so it really is a solo cabin. The shower has about a 12” section of glass that looks out into the room. I like this feature because it makes the shower feel larger and less claustrophobic. The shower itself is a pretty good size. It has a leg shaving bar and two small shelves. Bath gel and shampoo are provided in wall pumps. The shower can be removed from the wall to be used by hand. The water pressure was good but not ultra powerful. I’d have preferred it slightly stronger.
The sink is on the small size but not tiny. Definitely bigger than an airplane sink. There is some counter space and three large shelves on the wall, as well as a wall mounted soap dispenser and glass for your toothbrush. The mirror has LED lighting built in. The toilet is against the wall and the solid portion of the wall blocks it from view from the rest of the room so you don’t feel like there is a toilet on display.
In addition to the mirror, the bathroom is lit by three overhead lights, including one in the shower. There is also LED floor lighting.
Overall I love the aesthetics of the stateroom. It feels very modern and similar in design to a Hyatt Centric for example.
I noticed that there is a wifi point on the ceiling and I found wifi reception to be fantastic throughout the boat.
If every inside stateroom was this nice, I would not hesitate to book another one. I never felt like it was claustrophobic. Norwegian Cruise Line has a great product for solo travelers.
