The January 20 episode of Saturday Night Live took aim at Alaska Airlines. After a door plug blew out of the 737 Max 9 on Flight 1282 on January 5 over Oregon, the plane was able to safely land with minor injuries.
In the satirical mock commercial, a new tag line was introduced: Alaska Airlines — You didn’t die and you got a cool story.
“We’re the same airline where a pilot tried to turn off the engine mid-flight while on mushrooms, and now we’re so proud to say, that’s our second worst flight.”
Alaska Airlines has definitely had a difficult few months. I still believe that Alaska Airlines is an extremely safe airline (they changed their culture after the 2000 crash of Flight 261 to emphasize safety), but Alaska has grown a lot and the corporate culture has changed in the last decade.
