Hyatt Regency Portland Review
The Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center is a new 600 room hotel across the river from downtown. I stayed one night and was upgraded to a Corner Suite as a World of Hyatt Globalist. On a previous visit to Portland I stayed at the more central Hyatt Centric so decided to use a free night certificate. The property is a Category 3 (12,000 points per night) and rates for my date was around $120 per night. If I didn’t have a free night that was going to expire, I probably would have just paid cash.
Location
The property is across the street from the convention center and is geared towards those visiting the town for business.
However there is a Max light rail stop right in front of the hotel so it is easy enough to travel to downtown Portland or the airport with little hassle. It is also adjacent to the Moda Center arena where the Trail Blazers play.
The main entrance to the hotel is in what is essentially an alley that you enter either off Multnomah or MLK. If you are coming in on the Max, you will want to get off at the Convention Center stop and walk up MLK and enter the building that way.
If you are driving, Hyatt Regency has a parking garage across 2nd.
Check In
I arrived around 11:00pm and had already checked in on the Hyatt app. I did stop by the front desk to get my key and find out about Globalist breakfast (the restaurant was closed so I was told breakfast was in the market coffee shop). I was assigned room 763, one of their standard suites.
The lobby is quite large. In addition to the check in desk, there is the market at one end, a bar, the closed restaurant and then the elevators. Beyond the elevators are the ballrooms/conference area.
Room
The Corner Suites are somewhat misleadingly named. yes, they are at the corner of the building, but they only have windows along one wall. Typically I think of a corner suite having windows along at least two sides. I would call this a Junior Suite.
As you enter, there is a hallway with an open closet area where you can find a mini fridge (empty) and coffee set up.
The small living room area has a couch and large wall mounted TV along with a small desk.
The bedroom is a separate area that can be closed off. The main lighting in the room is a large lamp built into the headboard of the bed. There are also reading lights, a wall sconce, and a floor lamp. The bed faces another large wall mounted TV.
The window in the photos above looks bigger than it actually is. About half to the curtain is just covering a wall to give the illusion of more window space. The view is of the convention center and downtown Portland beyond.
Just to the left of the bathroom is another open closet area.
For those that are light sleepers, you may want to request a room on the side of the property that faces away from the convention center as the Max train runs directly under the rooms. I heard it all night but it personally didn’t bother me.
Bathroom
There is one bathroom in the suite and it is located off the bedroom. It is spacious but does not have a bathtub. Along one side is the shower and toilet nook.
The shower is enclosed by glass and has both a handheld and standard shower head. Some will dislike the wall mounted shampoo but it does produce less waste.
There is a single vanity with plenty of counter space.
Gym
There is a gym on the 3rd floor across from the (closed) Regency Club lounge.
There is no pool at the hotel.
Breakfast
As both the Regency Club and restaurant were closed during my visit, breakfast for Globalists was served at the Market coffee shop in the lobby.
The dish I ordered was out, so I got a waffle and fruit cup instead. The charge was removed from my bill prior to me checking out. It was a basic breakfast but adequate.
Given the choice of Hyatt properties in Portland, I would pick the Centric over the Regency. It is a better location and has a bit more character. The Regency is a nice new build and convenient for accessing the Max and convention center. It is a pretty standard business Hyatt Regency. You know you will get a good room with efficient service but not a ton of charm.
