Hyatt Regency Trinidad Presidential Suite Review
Last July, Extreme Hotel Deals spotted the Hyatt Regency Trinidad selling their Presidential Suite for the same price as a standard room. I picked up three nights for the MLK Jr weekend — a nice chance to escape the gloom of January in Seattle. The total for the three nights came to $606.79 USD after taxes and fees.
In addition to the Presidential Suite, the booking included access to the Regency Club.
Location
The Hyatt Regency Trinidad, which opened in 2008, is located on the Gulf of Paria. Don’t think of white sand beaches however. This is a working port city and this is a business hotel. There is no swimming except for in the 4th floor swimming pool.
The taxi ride in from the airport ($30/$35 if paid through the hotel) takes about 30 minutes. The property is just across the highway from the main business district of the city.
If you are looking for a fun destination with shopping and restaurants near by, this is not the property (or location). However, if you need a place to stay on the island, this is the best option.
Check In
I arrived around 5pm and there was no wait to check in. I was offered a choice of beverages to start my stay. The service throughout my stay was very professional. The times for breakfast and happy hour in the Regency Club were explained to me.
The lobby opens up to the waterfront promenade with various al fresco dining and drink options.
Presidential Suite
The 2,122 sq. ft. Presidential Suite (Room 2201) is located on the 22nd (top) floor. It is the first room in the hall off the elevator.
A marble entry opens up to the living room straight ahead, 1/2 bath to the left, and bedroom to the right.
Living Room and Kitchen
The living room is huge. I was told that during renovations in the hotel, this area was used as the temporary Regency Club. There are three sections to the open room — TV area with couches, sitting area, and dining room. Windows offer full views of the Gulf of Paria. A few of the windows, however, were damaged and completely foggy. The property has decided to disable the sheer curtain in front of these portions of the window as a (hopefully) temporary fix.
The TV area has an L shaped couch with low coffee table. TV is built into the end wall. A unique large painting is on the wall next to an office area with iMac (that can be closed off from the rest of the room with closet doors).
The sitting/lounge area has more seating as well as a closed off bar area.
The third section is the dining room with adjacent kitchen. The dining table can seat 8 and has a retro style chandelier above.
A lock off door to the next room would allow for additional space (and beds) if needed.
The kitchen has a breakfast bar. Appliances include coffee maker, microwave and stovetop.
A door to the hall is also located in the kitchen.
The large fridge comes fully stocked with beer, wine, water, juice and soda. All are included with the room.
The first night I received a welcome treat delivered to my room.
The 1/2 bath located just off the entry includes a toilet and sink.
Bedroom
To the right of the entry is the dressing room followed by the bedroom and main bathroom. The dressing room has a makeup desk with mirror as well as a dresser.
The dressing room has two large closets. The first has safe and dresser, the second has robes and suitcase stand.
The bedroom has one king size bed that faces a wall with TV installed.
While there is a lamp on the bedside table, there are no overhead lights in the bedroom.
Next to the shower is a nook with couch and window that also looks out towards the Gulf. However, the sheer curtains are set not to open as one of the windows is damaged. Just past the couch is the door to the balcony.
The bathroom is very open to the bedroom; especially the shower which is a glass enclosed box with fogged glass for limited privacy. If the sheer curtain was able to open, the shower would offer fantastic views. The shower has both a rain shower head and a handheld wand (one or the other can be used, not both at once).
Next to the shower door is the jetted tub. Unfortunately the jets are broken so it is a large soaking tub. However, the water in the hotel (and possibly all of Port of Spain) is slightly yellow in color. It isn’t very noticeable in the sink, but when in a full tub it made me think twice about taking a bath. I’m sure it is safe, but the optics of yellow water are a bit of a turn off for me.
There is a small window located just above the tub. While I like the natural light, there is no black out curtains. This allows for light of the city during the night and sun in the morning into the bathroom and bedroom. If light bothers you, you will want to bring eye shades for sleep.
A dual vanity is located under the mirror with plenty of counter space. The toilet is in a separate cubical with glass door.
The bath products are Kennet MD, not my favorite. However, there were various “premium” products through out; including mouthwash, lip balm, pressure point oil (?), foot lotion, after sun gel, and my favorite — non-scented body moisturizer. I wish more properties offered a fragrance free lotion.
A small balcony with views of both the Gulf and city has two chairs and a small table.
It is a great viewpoint for the sunset.
Directly below the balcony is the pool.
The Presidential Suite is huge and well appointed. The only minor problems, in my opinion, are the damaged windows (not a safety issue, just cosmetic) and lack of ability to black out light in the bedroom. I would prefer a better quality bath product, but the addition of premium offerings make up for it.
Regency Club
The Regency Club at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad is located off the lobby on the first floor. It is a large lounge (there was always seating) with a nice (but small) outdoor patio.
The breakfast and evening snacks were standard Regency options. Breakfast had 3-4 hot options while the evening happy hour had just one hot option. They did offer top shelf liquor.
Pool
The pool is located on the 4th floor and overlooks the Gulf. There are a good number of lounge chairs and day beds available as well as a bar.
The gym and spa are located on the third floor.
Overall
While clearly a business hotel, the Hyatt Regency Trinidad offers good service, fantastic views and a solid hard product. The Presidential Suite is huge and includes access to the Regency Club. If you have a reason to be in Trinidad, the Hyatt Regency offers the best hotel option.
