Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Review
After staying for two nights at the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam, we moved to the Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport as we were departing on an early flight the next day. I was able to reserve a room at a reasonable rate of €110.
Location
The Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport is located about 5km from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Besides the airport, there are a bunch of office parks and some farms. That’s it. There are not even restaurants nearby.
There is a shuttle that runs between the hotel and the airport every 30 minutes from 6:30am to 11:00am. If you are looking to get picked up at the airport, I would suggest contacting the hotel just to confirm details. We took the shuttle from the hotel to the airport and it was easy — got us to the terminal in about 20 minutes with only one stop (at an office park). Parking is free at the hotel should you have a car.
It is about a 20 minute drive from the Hyatt Place into the city. We took an Uber and it was about €40. Public transportation is possible but not a good option. If you want public transportation, I would suggest taking the train to the airport and catching the Hyatt shuttle there.
There are some hotels directly adjacent to the airport. This is not one of them. If you want easy access to the airport (ie walking), research another option like the Sheraton or Hilton.
Check In
We arrived around 6:00pm and had no difficulty checking in. The desk agent was extremely professional and helpful; my guess is that he may have been one of the managers. I had originally reserved a Standard King room with pull out sofa bed but asked for a room with two double beds and he had no problem accommodating.
The lobby of the hotel is quite grand; more typical of a Hyatt Regency than a Hyatt Place. The atrium is two stories with the mezzanine housing conference rooms.
Room
We were assigned room 835 on the 8th floor. Note that only two elevators go to floors 10-13, the last elevator stops at floor 9. With a total of 330 rooms and 13 stories, it is the biggest Hyatt Place I’ve visited. My guess is that if you picked up the property and moved it directly next to the airport it would become a Regency.
The room is quite basic but clean and modern. As we had a room with double beds, the couch/seating area was a bit smaller than a King room would have.
The views from our room on the 8th floor were of the other side of the hotel (the building is shaped like an “L”) farm land, office parks and the airport in the distance.
Bathroom
The bathroom is divided from the rest of the room with a frosted glass door. A large shower with glass door is basic but at least has a handheld shower head.
A single vanity is next to the toilet but a shelf allows for more counter space. Amenities are Kennet MD and there is no body lotion provided. Only one bar of soap must be shared between sink and shower although a bottle of body wash is provided.
The bathroom has heated floors which, I imagine would be nice in the winter, but made the bathroom a bit too warm in the summer. And there wasn’t a way to turn it off.
Restaurant
Unlike most Hyatt Place properties, the Amsterdam hotel has an onsite restaurant open for all meals. During breakfast it is complimentary for all guests. For dinner there is a buffet or items can be ordered off a menu.
The breakfast is a step up from the standard Hyatt Place breakfast. A number of hot dishes are available as well as cold options and baked goods.
Directly behind the check in desk is the bar and “Market” with grab and go options. The bar was quite lively the night we were there; it looked like a conference was in town.
Gym
The only other amenity to speak of is the gym located on the second floor. Pretty standard hotel gym equipment. There is no swimming pool.
Overall
The Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport is the first Hyatt Place property I have visited outside the US. I am impressed by it. It still feels quite sterile and business oriented, but it feels more like a hotel than the Hyatt Place properties in the US that feel more like a motel to me — 4 stories, cookie cutter lobby and breakfast area. It isn’t the most convenient hotel to either the airport or downtown Amsterdam, but the shuttle makes it easy access to the airport.
