Hyatt Zilara Cancun Review

Hyatt Zilara Cancun Review

Hyatt Zilara Check In and Guest Rooms
Hyatt Zilara Restaurants
Hyatt Zilara Amenities

Currently I am spending three nights at the Hyatt Zilara Cancun; one of five all inclusive Hyatt properties.  Hyatt Zilara Cancun (as well as the Zilara Rose Hill in Jamaica), are adults only.  Their other all inclusive brand, Hyatt Ziva, with three properties, is all ages.

I am traveling with two friends and we booked a double room “suite” (all rooms are suites) using points.  Typically it is 25,000 Hyatt points per night for two people; adding a third is an additional 12,500 points.  So the best use of points would be for a party in multiples of two.  One guest in a room by themselves would still be 25,000 points.  Having three in a room is 12,500 per person, same as having only two in a room but more crowded.

Location

The Hyatt Zilara Cancun is located in the Zona Hotelera; a strip of land where most of the big resorts are located.  It is located about 30 minutes from the airport.  A Bubba Gump and Outback Steakhouse are just across the street, but no reason to leave the property since it is all inclusive.

I arranged for the Hyatt Zilara to pick us up; $90 one way in an SUV.  There are definitely cheaper ways to get to the hotel, but it was nice to know there would be a staff member greeting us at the airport.  In the SUV they had cold water and towels prepared as well.

Check In

We arrived at the hotel late on a Wednesday night and had no wait to get in.  Other times (during the day, prime check-in/check-out hours), the lobby was much busier and I imagine would require a wait.

It definitely takes longer to check in at the Hyatt Zilara than at other hotels.  They require additional information — we were asked what type of pillows we wanted and what room scent we preferred, in addition to food allergies and whether or not we were celebrating any special occasion.  We were also given a daily event schedule, told about the various food options, and add ons were introduced (cabana rentals, massage, etc).

We were upgraded from a Junior Suite Double (standard room booked with points) to an Ocean Front Junior Suite Double.  It is a one category upgrade; as far as I can tell is the only difference is that it is on a higher floor.

If there is a line at check in, there is a separate World of Hyatt desk in the atrium (to the left upon walking in past check in).  I am not 100% sure, but I would assume you could check in there as a Hyatt elite.

Just off the check in lobby is the atrium lobby.

We were escorted to our room by the staff carrying our luggage.  The hotel is a long, thin building so all rooms have an ocean view.  There are two banks of elevators; one on each end of the hotel.  The hotel is 8 floors total with rooms on each floor (including the ground floor).

Rooms

We are staying in room 526 (5th floor).  As there are three of us, we reserved a room with two beds.  However, the beds are double and it would be tough to sleep two per bed.  We were able to have a rollaway delivered for our third person.

The room itself is a unique layout.  It is a rectangle in shape but a wall divides the bathroom from the main room.  The wall is at an angle, so the main room is quadrangle.

Besides the two bed is a two person jacuzzi in the main room.

There is also a table with two chairs, TV, and small desk.

Each bed had multiple pillows, a robe, and some candies.

We have the air condition as low as it will go, and it still doesn’t cool off the room very well.  It is August and 90+ outside, but don’t expect to have your room super chilled.

My other big complaint with the room is lack of black out curtains.  As soon as the sun rises, the room is very bright.  Considering the rooms face east, expect to be woken up early.

Each room has a balcony complete with two chairs, hammock, and spectacular views.

Just inside the front door is a mini bar that is restocked daily.  You can also call down and have it restocked more often if needed.  The fridge is stocked with water, soda, juice and beer.  There are also a few snacks.  A drip coffee maker and a wide selection of teas are provided.  Of course all is complimentary.

Of course you can also order room service at any time (included).  The strange thing is that our “bar” was missing the bottles of hard alcohol.  There is a slide out drawer for them, yet the bottles were missing.

Thinking it a mistake, I called down and they said they would have someone bring some up.  No one ever came.  Called again and they said they would bring them up tomorrow.  Still nothing.  Finally spoke with someone at the front desk that told us they no longer stock the room with liquor.

My theory is that recent events in Cancun have made the resort extra cautious and is only serving hard alcohol from the bar where it can be monitored.  Staff here won’t give me a straight answer, which makes me even more suspect that the tainted alcohol is the reason.  It remains to be seen if hard alcohol will return to the rooms.  Until then, the lobby bar is just an elevator away.

Another feature of the room is the “magic box”, a two door pass-through cubby where small items can be delivered by staff without disturbing the occupants of the room.  The delivery is put in the box and a notification light turned on to alert the guest to the arrival.

Overall I found the rooms to be extremely clean.  The decor is not my style (large sand pillars, sandstone browns) but it fits in within Cancun.

Bathroom

The bathrooms in the suites at the Hyatt Zilara Cancun include an outer area with closet and sink, and the inner area with a second sink, toilet and shower.

The shower is quite large.  On one wall is a standard handheld nozzle while the other wall has a rain shower head as well as 4 body jets.  There is also a window in the shower that looks into the main room.  It is only at head height so not much of a concern about privacy.

The bath amenities are Kennet MD, my least favorite of Hyatt products.  Also included is a small bottle of bug spray, though I never saw any mosquitos.  I am guessing it may have been added since the Zika scare.
