Improvements for Canopy by Hilton

I just completed my stay at the Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre.  In the long run it will be a great property (I believe) but they have a ways to go.  Here are my suggestions:

  1. Wait to open until the hotel is finished being built.  The Canopy in Reykjavik is the first property in the new brand.  It opened in July and I stayed in September.  During my stay there was still construction going on inside the hotel itself, to the outside of the hotel, and to the streets directly adjacent to the hotel.  The hotel should have waited until the construction of the hotel itself at least was finished.

  2. Train your staff on Diamond elite status benefits.  Some of the staff did not know what came with being an elite guest.  I actually emailed the property ahead of time to confirm.  3 course meal at Geiri Smart at Canopy Reykjavík City Center, two complimentary bottles of water, late check out, space available upgrade to a preferred room, 1,000 HHonors Bonus Points per night.  I was given a chocolate bar and some caramel corn at check in, but was not offered late check out, water, or the dinner.  When I asked they did get me the amenities, but I was told they no longer offer the dinner and don’t give out water because the water from the facet is good to drink.
  3. Encourage friendliness.  Again, some staff were quite friendly, others were more reserved, and a couple were rude.  I understand the northern European culture is stoic, however it would be nice to be greeted by staff.
  4. Provided needed room amenities.  There were some great room amenities provided — robes, books, coffee maker.  However there was no bottle opener nor were there any water glasses in the bathroom (I found some by the mini fridge).  When I called down about the bottle opener (to open the water bottles I was given after asking), they said they couldn’t send one up; I would have to come down and borrow it in the lobby.

    No water glasses

  5. Improve ventilation.  The Canopy does not have air condition, which is somewhat understandable considering it is a cool climate.  However, there is very little air flow in the room.  Overnight it got quite stuffy so I opened the window.  Unfortunately the window shade was blown by the window being open and clicked against the metal frame all night.  In the morning construction started early and could be easily heard through the open window.

    Noisy window shade

The bones of the brand new hotel are great; I LOVED my Junior Suite.  The hotel has only been open for 2 months.  In the grand scheme of things these are minor complaints.  However, the reputation of a property can stick and I would hate to see such a lovely property in a great location not thrive the way it should.
