Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok Review

Currently there is only one Hyatt property in Bangkok, the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok (however a Park Hyatt is currently being built).  The Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok is located about a three minute walk from the Ratchadamri stop on the skytrain and the large shopping malls along the road of the same name.  Traffic is awful around Bangkok so you’ll want to get used to taking the skytrain.  It is just one stop to Silom and a few more stops to the dock for the water taxis that take you up the river to Wat Pho (with the Reclining Buddha), Grand Palace, and Wat Arun (which is currently under restoration).

Likely you will arrive via the international airport.  Taxi makes the most sense as it can take the expressway and is cheap ($10-$15).  You can also take the airport train but at the taxi prices it doesn’t really make sense unless you are trying pinch every penny.

Check In: I arrived at 7:30pm and was escorted up to the Club Level to check in at the Grand Club.  This was the first time as a Diamond that I had been taken to the Club for check in.  The lounge staff at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok is fantastic; probably the best I’ve seen at any Hyatt property.  Happy hour had just finished, but the staff went out of their way to prepare me a dinner in the lounge before escorting me to my room.  They found out it was my birthday and quickly the entire staff knew and was offering their well wishes.

The Room: I used a Diamond Suite Upgrade and had a Grand Suite King corner suite on the 11th floor overlooking the pool.   The room was large but severely outdated in my opinion.  There were mirrors everywhere.  Doors folded out from the walls and didn’t lock.  The carpet was a Burberry pattern that didn’t fit the room.  There were odd tchotchkes like wooden elephant puzzles and carvings placed around the suite.

Despite the odd decor, the room was very clean and in very good shape.  It is clear that while they haven’t invested in updating the rooms; they have invested in training their staff.

The suite itself has a large living room with a half bath off of the entry area.  Couches and a table with chairs as well as a counter with mini bar round out the first room.

The bedroom has windows on two sides and the black out curtains do a decent job of keeping out the bright lights of the buildings across the street.  The bed is very comfortable.  There is an odd vanity with mirror that has the old style Hollywood dressing room lights that are turned on and off via a knob that looks like a drawer pull.  I am glad the staff showed me how to work it; otherwise I would have been searching for a switch.

The Bathroom: The bathroom, like the rest of the suite, is a funhouse of floor to ceiling mirrors which makes it feel bigger (and disorienting).  There is a dressing area with safe.  A double vanity is in the center with the toilet (with Japanese style built in bidet) to the left.  To the right is the large soak tub and separate shower with both rain shower head and wand.

The products are the usual Grand Hyatt products; June Jacobs which isn’t my favorite.  It smells way too strongly of old lady perfume.

Pool and Spa: The pool and spa area have been updated and are fantastic.  There are plenty of lounge chairs located around the pool.  Again, the staff are fantastic; before you even sit down they appear with towels to make up your chair for you.  The view isn’t anything special; this is an inner city property and the sky train zips right by every few minutes (which you can not only see and hear but also feel the vibrations.  Light sleepers beware).

The spa has very nice gender separate areas that any guests can use without needing to book an appointment.  Steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and cold plunge pool as well as all the other amenities you would expect from a high end spa.

I did get a spa treatment; which was reasonably priced, professional and extremely relaxing.  The spa staff was very accommodating with fitting me in for a treatment last minute.

Grand Club: The Grand Club at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok offers what typical Hyatts offer internationally.  You could eat both breakfast and dinner in the Club if you so desire (and are a Diamond member or have booked a Club level room).  Breakfast had a good variety of fresh hot and cold food.  Happy hour each night, while not meant as a true meal, could easily substitute a light dinner.

Service: The highlight by far of my stay at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok was the staff.  They went above and beyond to remember my name, what I liked to drink, and wished me a happy birthday every chance they got.  On my second day a cake was delivered to my room.  One day at the pool I was brought a complimentary plate of fruit to celebrate.

Housekeeping was on point; I don’t know how they did it but their timing was perfect.  I’d go up to the lounge for a quick breakfast and when I came back my room was made up.  Evening turn down service also managed to time their visits perfectly with when I stepped out.

Overall: The Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok is currently the only Hyatt property in town.  While the rooms could use updating, the level of service makes up for the outdated decor.  EDIT: Apparently the rooms were completely renovated three years ago.  YIKES.  Not modern at all; definitely feels like 1980s.  No clue why they decided to go with this design.  Perhaps it is just for a completely different demographic than I fall in to.  One that likes lots of mirrors, trinkets, mismatched carpet and lighted make-up vanities.  I liked it better when I thought it was just outdated… now I believe the rooms are just done in bad taste.
